Auguste Elder throws his tea ware exclusively for Cha Bay Fine Teas & Rough Wares–the company that he and his partner Lisa Chan co-founded in 2019.
His work is collected across the globe, and can be found on nearly every continent. Delicate but enduring, these wares are meant to service the seasoned tea enthusiast with a timeless sublimity that honors harmony, reverential serenity, purity, and quietude: the centuries-old tenets of the path of tea.
Elder considers commissions for those who are willing to embrace the necessary time-frame involved in the wood-firing process. Depending on when in the season the work is commissioned, typical turnaround can take anywhere from one to twelve months.

Informed by 5th century BCE Etruscan Urns and Pre-Columbian ritual objects, these cinerary vessels were made to inter not only human remains, but our fragile cultural remnants and impulses. They have been charged with the task of informing future generations of our resistances and adaptations to our current political atmosphere, lest they repeat our quietus.

"From New York City artist Auguste Elder’s intriguing wood-fired ceramic “Canopic Urn: Parable of Serving Trout Tea,” suggesting a pre-Columbian artifact with a wry contemporary twist...this show draws you in and delights you over and over." -The Sacramento Bee correspondent, Victoria Dalkey, on her review of the international juried exhibition "By Hand" at Blue Line Arts, Roseville, CA...2018.

Wood-fired vessels bear the scars and narratives of the kiln's extreme environment. How the fire's tongue enunciates the shift and churn of atoms, where and by which forms vessels neighbor one another on the shelf, and how the choreographed stoking and combustion draft the laws of motion across the vitrifying lips and shoulders of forms is a most privileged glimpse into the origins of galaxies. But to sip from a jar made this way is to kiss the Universe square on the mouth, plain and simple, and quench our thirst for that which is authentic and ever fleeting.

Various watercolor paintings of paleontological (fossil) specimens were drawn from life while serving as a national park ranger at The Badlands National Park, South Dakota.
Additional watercolor paintings are from an ongoing series of dead or dying tree specimens encountered during my travels. All works executed on watercolor paper.
